TREES AND RETAIL
“Green Retailing” is all the rage in the marketing world and nothing says “green” like a tree. Trees mean clean air and water, lower energy bills and higher property values, all in one convenient package. And trees mean “green” in more ways than one. Studies have found that treelined retail districts encourage more frequent visits, more time spent shopping and more spending by consumers (Journal of Forestry, 2005). MillionTreesNYC, a citywide campaign to plant and care for a million new trees by 2017, can help merchants harness the power of trees to improve the look and appeal of their stores and shopping districts.

LES Business Networking Event

Date and Time TBA

Sonia Rose Restaurant,
74 Orchard Street

The event will feature a presentation by the Visiting Nurse Services of New York’s Community Connections TimeBank, a community-building tool that identifies volunteers who can help your business based on your needs, ranging from more routine tasks to matters requiring technical expertise.

We hope this event will give your business an opportunity to network with other businesses in the BID as well as with MCC members.  Through networking, you will learn about other businesses in your area and become more effective at identifying solutions to common and specific needs.  Our hope is that this event will contribute towards the effective operation of Lower East Side businesses and that businesses will refer customers to one another.

WEST NILE SEASON
The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is currently preparing for the re-emergence of the West Nile virus as part of a long-term, comprehensive approach to preventing mosquito-borne diseases. Prevention can be achieved by eliminating mosquito-breeding sites such as standing or accumulated water, and by applying low toxicity pesticide that kills mosquito larvae. Please be advised that any property owner or manager within New York City is obliged under Article 151 of the NYC Health Code to remove any accumulated water from his or her property. For more information call 311 or visit: http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/wnv/wnvhome.shtml.

ART LOWDOWN
The Lower Manhattan Cultural Committee has a complimentary monthly e-newsletter called The LowDown, a cultural calendar of the best free and inexpensive art and cultural events downtown. The LowDown was inaugurated to help foster a sense of community among our fellow downtown neighbors in order to share all of the wonderful cultural events that take place just around the corner!

It is our hope that you will pass The LowDown along to your colleagues and look for cultural events in the LES:
